Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions parents ask us most often. If yours is not here, the Administration Office is always happy to help — call 024 451 2060 or send us a message.
Admissions
How do I apply for a place at Sunset Montessori School?
Start by contacting the Administration Office or sending an enquiry through our Contact page. You then collect or download the Application Form, submit it with the required documents and the application fee, attend a family meeting, and — for children aged 3 and above — bring your child in for a short, friendly assessment. The full four-step process is set out on our Admissions page.
What documents do I need to submit with an application?
A completed and signed Application Form, a copy of the child’s birth certificate, a copy of the up-to-date immunisation record (the "weighing card"), a completed Student Medical History Form, two recent passport-sized photographs of the child, a copy of a parent or guardian’s valid ID, and copies of previous academic records where the child is joining Primary or JHS.
What age can my child start?
We admit children from around 18 months into our preschool programmes, and run continuously through Children’s House, Primary and Junior High School. Contact the Administration Office to discuss the right starting point for your child.
Is there an entrance examination?
Not in the conventional sense. For applicants aged 3 and above we arrange a short, friendly assessment and a classroom observation. It is there to help us place your child correctly and to check that the Montessori environment suits them — it is not a pass-or-fail examination.
When should I apply for the 2026/2027 academic year?
Admission forms for 2026/2027 are available now from the Administration Office. Places are limited and are offered on a first-come basis, so we encourage families to apply early.
Do you accept students mid-year?
Where a place is available in the relevant class, yes. Contact the Administration Office to check current availability.
Fees & Payment
How much are the school fees?
Our current fee schedule is issued by the Administration Office, because fees vary by programme and are reviewed each academic year. Call 024 451 2060 or send us a message and we will send you the schedule that applies to your child’s class.
When are fees due?
All termly fees must be paid in full on or before the first day the child attends school for the new term. If your family is facing genuine financial difficulty, please speak to the Administration Office before the deadline so we can discuss a payment plan. Fees unpaid by the start of the third week result in suspension from class until the account is settled.
How can I pay?
By bank deposit, by Mobile Money (MoMo), or in cash at the Administration Office. Always use your child’s School ID Number as the payment reference so we can match the payment to the right account.
Do you offer a discount for siblings?
Yes. A 10% discount on tuition fees applies to the second child, and a 15% discount applies to the third child and any subsequent children. The discount applies to tuition fees only.
Are there other costs beyond tuition?
There is a non-refundable application fee, a one-time non-refundable enrolment fee for new pupils, and the cost of uniforms and textbooks. Uniform items must be purchased from the Administration Office. Details of required textbooks are provided on enrolment.
The School Day
What time does the school day start and end?
Pupils arrive between 7:00 AM and 7:25 AM. Assembly begins at 7:30 AM, classes start at 8:00 AM, and official pick-up is at 3:00 PM.
What happens if my child arrives late?
A pupil arriving after 7:30 AM is recorded as late. The parent must escort the child to the Administration Office to sign in and collect a Late Pass before going to class.
What should I do if my child is ill?
Call the Administration Office as early as possible, and no later than 8:00 AM. A doctor’s note is required for any absence of three or more consecutive days due to illness.
Can my child bring a mobile phone or smartwatch?
No. Personal electronic devices — phones, smartwatches, games and similar — are not permitted. Anything found is confiscated and returned only to a parent or guardian after a discussion. Toys from home are also not allowed.
Can pupils leave the campus to buy food?
No. Pupils may not leave the campus at any time during the school day, including to buy food from vendors outside the gate.
Curriculum & Progress
Is this a Montessori school or a GES school?
Both, deliberately. We blend the child-centred Montessori method with the academic structure of the Ghana Education Service curriculum. Children learn through discovery in a prepared environment, and they are also fully prepared for the BECE and for the demands of the national system. Our Academics page sets out each division.
What classes do you offer?
Preschool through to Junior High School: Preschool, Primary School, and JHS. JHS pupils sit the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
What subjects do JHS students take?
The core subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. We also offer ICT, French, Ghanaian Language and Culture, and Basic Design and Technology (BDT).
How is my child assessed?
Through a blend of formative assessment — daily observation, class exercises and verbal checks — and summative GES-style assessment through monthly tests, mid-term and end-of-term examinations. Report cards are issued at the end of every term and include both GES grades and a Montessori narrative on your child’s personal development.
How much homework should I expect?
Preschool children receive practical "Home Connection Activities" to do with a parent. Primary and JHS pupils receive academic reinforcement homework daily from Monday to Thursday. Persistent failure to complete homework is escalated to a parent meeting.
Communication
Who do I contact if I have a concern?
The Administration Office is the first point of contact for every parent enquiry, concern and piece of feedback. This ensures your concern is logged, assigned to the right person, and followed through to a resolution.
Can I contact my child’s teacher directly?
Not on a personal mobile number — that applies to all school matters and protects both teachers and families. For daily, non-urgent notes, use your child’s Communication Book. To arrange a formal meeting with a teacher, contact the Administration Office.
How do I report a safeguarding or child protection concern?
Contact the Administration Office and ask for the Designated Safeguarding Lead, or call 024 451 2060. If a child is in immediate danger, call the Police on 191 or 112 first. Our full procedure is on the Child Protection & Safeguarding page.
Where can I find the term dates?
On our Academic Calendar page, and from the Administration Office.
