Accessibility Statement

Sunset Montessori School wants every parent, pupil and member of staff to be able to use this website, including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard alone, need larger text, or use a slow or intermittent connection.

Accessibility is not a one-off project for us. We check it whenever we add a page, and we fix what we find.

Conformance Status

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. These are the internationally recognised standard for making web content usable by people with disabilities.

Our current status is partially conformant: most of the site meets the standard, and the known gaps are listed below with what we intend to do about them.

This statement was prepared by self-assessment, using keyboard-only testing, browser zoom, and automated checks. It has not yet been reviewed by an external accessibility auditor.

What We Have Built In

• Skip to main content — press Tab on any page and the first stop lets you jump straight past the navigation.
• Full keyboard access — every menu, button, form field and carousel control can be reached and operated without a mouse, with a visible focus outline.
• Light and dark themes — both are checked for text contrast, and the site follows your device setting unless you choose otherwise.
• Reduced motion — if your device is set to reduce motion, the carousel and page animations stop moving and change state instantly instead.
• Text alternatives — photographs carry descriptive alternative text, and decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers.
• Responsive, zoomable layout — the site reflows down to small phone screens and up to 200% browser zoom without losing content.
• Meaningful structure — proper headings, landmarks and labelled form fields so assistive technology can navigate the page.
• Light pages — images are compressed to WebP and sized ahead of time, so pages load quickly on mobile data.

Known Limitations

We know about the following issues and are working on them.

• The embedded Google Map on the Contact page is supplied by Google and we cannot change how it behaves with assistive technology. Our full street address, GPS code and postal address are written out in text immediately above it, so no information is only available inside the map.
• Some older photographs carry short generic alternative text rather than a detailed description. We are rewriting these as we revisit each page.
• Downloadable documents issued by the Administration Office are not always tagged for screen readers. If you need any school document in an accessible format, ask us and we will provide one.
